The insight behind M&S Food's winning health strategy.
The Brief
M&S Food needed to understand how the brand could credibly lead on healthier eating. In a category saturated with wellness claims, they needed evidence that would guide real product and brand decisions, not just positioning language.
What We Did
We mapped the full landscape of existing and emerging health needs, combining desk research, expert interviews, consumer food diaries and AI-driven analysis. We ran a future-facing territory development workshop designed to generate strategic direction at pace. We then evaluated the most promising territories for customer resonance and commercial opportunity, building health typologies, brand opportunity maps and ROI modelling for new ranges.
What It Changed
Our work became the foundation of M&S Food's new health strategy, directly informing the launch of the EatWell+ range, a healthy snacking focus, the Good Gut and High Protein ranges, and partnerships with Home Nations Football Associations and Zoe. In April 2023, M&S Food set a target of 70% healthier food sales tonnage by 2024/25. By April 2024 they had reached 69%.
